Structure
CM-dextran is manufactured by reacting selected dextran fractions with an activated carboxymethyl derivative in alkali. This leads to the introduction of O-carboxymethyl groups along the dextran chain. The carboxyl content is approximately 5% which is equivalent to about one CM group for every 5 five glucose units. Higher degrees of substitution may be achieved if required.
Storage and stability
CM-dextran is stable for more than 6 years when stored dry in well-sealed containers at ambient temperature.
Solubility
CM-dextran dissolves readily in water.
Application
CM-dextran can be used as stabilisers for sensitive biopolymers, as non-toxic ingredients in formulations, as reagents for binding cations (inorganic and organic) via carboxyl reactions and more. Read more about application here.
