Cell media additive

Dextran sulfate is a common cell media additive where it is often used as an anti-coagulant. Aggregations of cells affect cell growth, nutrient transport, and proliferation and obstruct cell counting and monitoring. Dextran sulfate in combination with trypsin was shown to diminish cell-aggregation during the culture of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells (1). Dextran sulfate has also been shown to inhibit apoptosis and increase protein production in CHO cells (2) when used in cell media.
